Select a few parts, then create a model! How do you do that?

About 5 years ago, I saw this guy that I worked with hold the left mouse button, draw a rectangle around a bunch of parts, and then he created a model in about 10 key strokes.
How did he do that?
When I right click after selecting parts, the menu offers me:
"edit properties"
"link database part"
Do you go from either of these menu items?
