How to add menu items to the OrCAD PCB Editor menu without editing the standard OrCAD PCB Editor menu

How-To

Along with the standard OrCAD PCB Editor menu, a customized menu is added at the end, for designers to use customized scripts. With each hotfix installed, the standard menu may change. Adding a customized menu for designers to use is a manual process. All the designers do not update to the latest hotfix at the same time.

How can I append the standard OrCAD PCB Editor menu with the customized menu automatically?

Can I add menu items to the OrCAD PCB Editor menu without editing the standard OrCAD PCB Editor menu?

Answer

In the SPB 16.6 release, you can append additional menu items to the standard OrCAD PCB Editor menu by using the axlUIMenuInsert SKILL command.

Attached to this article is a sample SKILL file that inserts two menus into OrCAD PCB Editor.

Grid Scripts
SKILL tools

For the Grid Scripts menu items, you need to have the appropriate script in your scriptpath variable setting. This can be done by going to Setup — User Preferences — Paths — Config and setting the scriptpath to where the scripts are present on the system.

For the SKILL Tools menu item, you need the custom SKILL code or the command that is understood by OrCAD PCB Editor when typed, because there are no menu commands that are calling it out.

The SKILL file is provided "as is". Open the SKILL file in a text editor to view the implementation and use instructions.

Other related commands are:

axlUIMenuChange, axlUIMenuDelete, axlUIMenuDump, axlUIMenuLoad, axlUIMenuRegister, axlTriggerSet

These commands are documented in your installation directory hierarchy \share\pcb\examples\skill\DOC\FUNCS.

Note: The scripts mentioned in the attached SKILL file need to be created by you and added to scriptpath as mentioned earlier in this section.
